JONESING FOR GREAT JONES

After setting up shop at #55 Great Jones Street in Manhattan, we found some interesting historic facts about our street. Here are three note worthy discoveries.

1. Named after Samuel Jones, "The Father of The New York Bar" in 1789.
2. During the 80's, Jean Michel Basquiat lived, worked, and died right next door at #57 Great Jones.
3. The term "jonesing" comes from a darker period in our streets history when drug users were the main occupants of the sidewalk.

CITYSCAPE

It is very rare that The Future Perfect will exhibit flat works of art but when we saw the subtle saturated colors and silent city moments of John Aquilino's paintings we could not resist. Aquilino's paintings seem to tell the story of a city is waking from a waning dream. The precision of perspective and a text book example of foreground, middle distance, and background make it seem like you could step into the world that Aquilino has created. So detailed it looks familiar, so void of humanity it seems deserted, so still it is permanent.

GYMNASIUM SERIES BY SOREN ROSE FOR MATER

How awesome is this collection? Leave it to Danish design team, Mater, to mass produce a sustainable collection of cabinets that look this sleek. Together with Soren Rose, they've managed to recapture our earliest memories of playing with our friends in Gym class, and the unbelievably simplistic beauty of that vast gym floor stretching under our feet.

Using sustainable, eco-friendly materials, like renewable pine and controlled Danish oak with water-based fixatives and varnishes, Mater produces a brilliant series crafted by Denmark's oldest cabinet makers, Bruno Hansen carpentry. For every piece purchased, Mater donates a percentage of the profits to promoting sports in developing countries, allowing a new generation to be inspired to play and create.

ALL THAT NOISE

If you are watching the 2010 World Cup this year (with the volume on) you will hear a rather loud buzzing/blaring noise. This noise is coming from a simple plastic horn that almost every fan in attendance will be wielding. King Park Stadium in Durban South Africa has a capacity of 40,000 people, so you could imagine that this would get quite loud. Many news sources have been reporting that these horns are creating an annoyance and putting an over all damper on this years game. Never before has an instrument of spirit created such a controversy!

Check out our horn shaped noise makers! The Parrot Speakers by Philippe Stark. A great way to pump up the volume.

SALT & PEPPER SHAKERS BY DAVID SHRIGLEY

Someone asked me the other day, "... but why Cocaine and Heroin?" And I thought for a moment and said, "Well, because Cocaine is white and Heroine is brown, typically, so you won't confuse which is which."

But, really, any consideration of David Shrigley's work inevitably comes to an attempt to perceive and understand the imagination that brought it into being: to explain the unhinged, askew view of the world that it presents. The truth is that there are no right or wrong answers. The only factual truth here is that these fine Shakers by David Shrigley have been traditionally made from bone china in Staffordshire, England. Supplied in a hand finished box, also made in England.

DESIGNER: ALEX RANDALL

Aside from the occasional antler chandelier, we'd never heard of anyone mixing a light with taxidermy before. This Saturday, May 15, we will have the pleasure of presenting the truly captivating work of the English bespoke lighting sculptor, Alex Randall, who will be unveiling her never before seen Rat Swarm Lamp in our space at 55 Great Jones.

"Bespoke" is a term used to describe a high degree of customization, and involvement of the end-user, in the production of the good. Alex, who has a degree in sculpture from the Chelsea College of Art and Design and also an MA in Professional Writing, creates pieces of sculpture that draw on this theme. Her creations are the result of hours upon hours of work striving toward realizing a client's vision, which simultaneously transport all of us into a magical place of her making.

For a view of Alex Randall's previous works, please visit her website.

DESIGNER: PAUL LOEBACH

Paul Loebach was raised in Cincinnati, Ohio amid the industrial landscape of the Midwestern US, where he left to graduate from Rhode Island School of Design in 2002. Descended from generations of German woodworkers, industrial design was an inherent part of his childhood. His father is a manufacturing engineer who developed new plastic forming technologies for Union Carbide in the 1970's. He also designed and made all of the furniture for the family's house in Ohio, and would explain how the industrially produced plates and flatware at the dinner table were made. Paul grew up with an awareness that you can create your own environment.

After graduating from RISD, Paul moved to New York City and established a design studio where he currently works as a consultant, specializing in wood furniture and emerging manufacturing technologies. Loebach's simultaneous embrace of technology and craft is evident in his designs. Firmly grounded in old-school woodworking techniques, he revisits traditional forms with advanced processes. He believes that while technology can be very liberating, he's not about to abandon drawing, because design without the human element is doomed to irrelevance.

Paul writes about his work, "I'm interested in design as the study of form for the basic purpose of giving objects meaning. Design is a semiotic language and must therefore hold a balance between the continuity of recognizable imagery, and the poetic shift of innovation. The future of design is nothing more than an embodiment of the profoundly human need to structure our environment as a reflection of ourselves." This statement is evident in this 2008 project, Half Mirror, which exposes the two most interesting parts of a mirror that are never seen: the 'cross-section' of the frame, and the glowing edge of the mirrored glass. Decorative surrealism.

For more information about Paul and his works, both past and present, please visit his website, or contact us.

COFFEE CUP DESIGNER LESLIE BUCK PASSES ON AT 87

Chances are if you've ever gotten a cup of coffee *to go* in New York City at a deli or street cart, it's been served to you in a familiar blue and white "We Are Happy to Serve You" cup. Introduced in the 1960s, the Anthora cup has appeared in the hands of actors in countless movies and TV shows, and is an iconic symbol to many of the busily buzzing New Yorkers who need their caffeine and need it quickly.

Buck, a refugee from Nazi Europe who survived Auschwitz and Buchenwald, was born Laszlo Buch in 1922 in what was then Czechoslovakia. He originally designed the Anthora for the Sherri Cup Company in Kensington, Connecticut. Millions of cups have been manufactured since, spurring copycats to come up with their own versions, including this eco-friendly ceramic version we love here a TFP.

We're happy you served us, Mr. Buck. Thank you.

DESIGNER: LINDSEY ADELMAN

If you've been to visit TFP in Manhattan, then you may have had the opportunity not only to see the wondrous and various hand-blown glass Bubble Chandeliers floating here and there above your head, but perhaps to also meet with their creator, Lindsey Adelman, who graciously shares her creative energy with us there as our studio mate. Quite intuitive and with no shortage of vision, Lindsey is also one of the nicest designers to work with.

Lindsey Adams Adelman was born in New York City in 1968. Her current work is a culmination of endlessly making things with her hands as a little girl, to receiving a BA in English Literature, to working for the Smithsonian, to finding her way to Rhode Island School of Design to earn a BFA in Industrial Design. An ongoing interest in combining the hand-crafted with the machine-made, the sensual with the practical, and the feminine with the masculine consistently marks her work.
Since 2005 Adelman has focused on her own line of hand-blown glass lighting, sculpture and artwork. The collective work has been included in the Cooper-Hewitt Design Triennial and Design Miami and has received awards from the ICFF Editors, ID, and Blueprint.

Lindsey and our owner, David Alhadeff, have had a long history together, first meeting back in 2004 at the first Altoids Living Spaces show, curated by Dave with Jason Miller, in which Lindsey won the Designer of the Year award. Their relationship continued to flourish, eventually leading to Lindsey launching her Knotty Bubbles project, a collaboration with studio Creative Director Bec Brittain, glass artist Michiko Sakano, and designer Kristin Barron, exclusively for The Future Perfect, in 2009. Shortly after, in November of 2009, they moved in together in our space at 55 Great Jones Street. Since, there have been many new developments in Lindsey's studio, some of which will premier at our ICFF event this year.

For more information about Lindsey Adelman and her projects, visit her and her creative team at her website, or contact us.

CHECK OUT THAT SCOREBOARD

Check out that Scoreboard

Just look up to see the overwhelming lead the New York Knicks had on Sunday night, and just above it is the stunning ceiling of Madison Square Garden! Designed by architect Charles Luckman in 1968, the current MSG building is the fourth version of itself. The original was constructed in 1879 and was located at 26th Street and Madison Ave.

Needless to say, the Knicks ended up beating the Indiana Pacers,132-89. It was the "biggest victory in franchise history."

A CRITICAL EYE HAS DIED

A Critical Eye Has Died

The oldest US Design Magazine has shut down. ID Magazine, with its reliable source for news and criticism of the design world, will no longer be published. Many familiar faces of the design world attended the Wake of the magazine at Half King Bar and Restaurant in Manhattan on January 5th, 2010. This crowd, normally accustomed to attending design shows, parties or other such events for their trade, were forced to mourn the loss of a magazine that was, love it or hate it, considered scripture to designers worldwide.
