Eric Roinestad

Eric Roinestad is a visual multi-hyphenate working across the worlds of ceramics, design and art direction. His Los Angeles-based studio, ER Studio, produces one of a kind ceramic sculpture, home accessories and lighting.

Integrating the spirit of California folk modernism with the designer’s own Scandinavian heritage, Eric Roinestad's ceramic pieces are a combination of hand built and traditionally wheel thrown. The result is unique, personality-driven pieces that strike a unique balance between organic and modern forms – an alluring juxtaposition.

Eric Roinestad was born and raised on California's Central Coast, surrounded by a family of builders, thinkers and makers. The designer pursued a degree in applied art and design from California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo, before moving south to Los Angeles to establish Eric Roinestad Design, a boutique graphic design studio specializing in print work for the entertainment and fashion industries. His prodigious output included packaging, advertising campaigns, publications, logos and brand identities for a blue chip client list that included Fox Searchlight Pictures, Virgin Records, Universal Pictures, Gramercy Pictures and Epic Records. He has designed seminal album covers for artists such as Fiona Apple, Duran Duran, Dave Matthews Band and Kylie Minogue.

In the late 90s, Eric Roinestad was an integral member of the team that conceived and launched Flaunt Magazine, the avant-garde monthly publication that captured the zeitgeist through its deft blend of art, music, design and fashion. As the publication’s art director from 1998 and 2002, Roinestad made the publication a highly tactile, visually arresting experience. Past issues of the title remain highly collectible today.

In 2002, Eric Roinestad became the senior art director for Capitol Records and was responsible for rebranding the company whilst designing album packaging for the label's top talent including the Beatles, Rosanne Cash, Liz Phair and Snoop Dogg. He led the art direction and design of visual elements relating to the company's corporate promotions and artist releases, including album packaging, consumer and trade advertising, logos, photo shoots, in-store displays, billboards, and other promotional materials.

A passion for beautifully handmade work as well as the natural habitat of Southern California led Eric Roinestad towards a new career chapter. ER Studio’s genesis can be traced back to when the designer began creating ceramics as a passion project. With natural instincts for proportion and form, the work – which drew from his California environment as well as historical modern design and architecture – caught the attention of local retailers and designers.

ER Studio’s evolution now includes a range of sculptural and decorative pieces, most of which are larger scale - oversized vessels and lighting. Eric Roinestad ceramics have been exhibited at Design Miami and featured in publications including the New York Times T Magazine, Architectural Digest, Elle Decor, AD France and Wallpaper. Imbued with an ineffable handmade character, each piece offers an elegant visual symmetry between the organic and modern; the contemporary and the traditional.
