Karl Zahn

Karl Zahn is a lighting designer based in Brooklyn, New York (RISD ’03). Originally from rural Vermont, he spent time as a fabricator in San Francisco before settling in New York to focus on lighting design - finding a home with Lindsey Adelman Studio (2009-2019).

It was while at LAS that he was able to work simultaneously on his own projects outside of the studio, launching the Cora, Atlas, Bounce, Demeter, and Arbor collections with Roll & Hill, as well as numerous wooden toys and products with AREAWARE. His tenure at LAS, beginning with the fabrication of the bubble chandeliers, culminated with the Kingdom collection, his own collaboration with the studio. Soon after leaving, he launched Stratus, his latest collection with The Future Perfect in 2021. Building off of the fabrication techniques learned while in San Francisco, the lighting experience from his time at Lindsey Adelman Studio, and a lifetime of tinkering and balancing sculpture, the Stratus lights are yet another demonstration of Karl Zahn’s ability as a craftsman and as a lighting pioneer.

Zahn has worked with companies such as AREAWARE, Artecnica, Radnor, Teroforma, Lindsey Adelman Studio, and Roll & Hill. His work has been featured in print in Architectural Digest, Dwell, ELLE Decoration, Wallpaper*, T Magazine, Vogue, Interior Design, The New York Times, Casa Brutus, as well as online on DesignCurial, Sight Unseen, Dezeen, Designboom, and elsewhere.
