Mary Wallis

Mary Wallis is an Australian born, New York City based lighting designer who draws on expertise in broader fields to produce pieces that are on the cutting edge of the design world. With an obsession for transforming the broken and unfinished into items of beauty and function, Wallis pushes the boundaries of avant garde design and pragmatic, superior craftsmanship.

Born in Melbourne, Wallis’s resume is filled with design and art, as well as other influences, which allow her to cross pollinate and diversify. At age 5 she began a 18 year apprenticeship with Master Chinese painter Richard Liddicut, an education which continues to influence the designer. At University, Wallis’s chosen study of genetics and pursuit of a PH.D. led to a move to England, where she was introduced to the world of industrial design by way of the Central St. Martin’s College in London. After switching gears to study design in the UK, Wallis moved to New York City where further studies at Parson’s New School for Design and the Pratt Institute completed her design education.

Her extensive studies led to a collaboration with Lindsey Adelman’s celebrated studio where she worked as a Senior Designer focusing on personalized customer installations. In 2014, her personal line and collection, Mary Wallis for Lindsey Adelman, was released. Incorporating an aesthetic of fragmentation and sleek modernism, Wallis works from her East Village based studio to achieve high levels of customization and objects that aspire to serve a better, more beautiful world.

Her design Party Lights incorporates her specific aesthetic and showcases the designer's eye for detail and skill at reimagining everyday objects. With minimalist gold framework and bulbous light bulbs reminiscent of vintage Christmas lights and backstage vanities, her lighting chandelier hangs artfully in a vertical loop and immediately telegraphs the designer’s unique aesthetic. Another collection exhibiting the extent of Mary Wallis lighting is her Light Line, which features sconces and floor lamps to equally inventive effect. With cold cathode materials and no-fuss base designs, the pieces are revolutionary in their simplicity and expert in their state of the art construction.

Mary Wallis has been featured in Luxe Design and Interiors, Vogue, New York Magazine, Vogue Living, Architectural Digest, Sight Unseen, Gather Journal, Licht, Loczi Designs, Yellowtrace, Metropolis, Dwell, Elle Decor, Hotel Design, 3Rings, Wallpaper*, Design Brooklyn, Belle, Craft Arts, Design Sponge, and more.
