Odd Matter

Based in Amsterdam, Odd Matter is a design studio founded by Dutch native Els Woldhek and Bulgarian Georgi Manassiev. Defined by its analytical purview, the studio’s work is known for its unorthodox material palette and unrestrained approach.

Odd Matter brings a subversive and somewhat atypical approach to contemporary design, manifested in groundbreaking work such as the 2015 Node lighting series, which consists of four sculptural lamps rendered in copper and Jesmonite, and 2017’s Hours, a furniture series made with soft metal mesh. Meta, a recently created side table that closely mimics the appearance of marble, epitomizes the studio’s playful take on materiality.

Woldhek and Manassiev met in London, where both were undertaking postgraduate studies at the Design Products department at The Royal College of Art. Brought together by their probing and idiosyncratic approach to design and an interest in pushing the boundaries of matter, the studio is multidisciplinary, working across the fields of product, interiors and private commissions.

In dissecting an Odd Matter design, things are rarely as they seem. With a penchant for the illusory, the duo are known for creating one-of-a-kind objects with unexpected materials including Jesmonite, Gypsum, Cork and Scagliola. According to the designers, their practice is driven by “curiosity for all the strange and wonderful.”

In recent years Odd Matter studio have been featured in a range of international publications, including Dezeen, Sight Unseen and Domus. The studio’s work has been exhibited at Spazio Rossana Orlandi during Salone del Mobile, London’s Vessel Gallery, and as part of the exhibition by the Craft Council at Design Days Dubai.
