Synonymous with excellence, Austrian glass and chandelier creator J. & L. Lobmeyr relies on over 190 years of craftsmanship to manufacture designs that capture an enduring universal appeal. From their Viennese storefront on Kärntner Straße, Lobmeyr’s six generations of experts create everything from everyday glassware to fixtures for opera houses, palaces and mosques. Lobmeyr glass and Lobmeyr crystal exhibit generations of excellence.

Founded in Vienna, Austria in 1823 by Joseph Lobmeyer, the name was later changed to J. & L. Lobmeyr by his sons Joseph and Louis. With Joseph as the marketing director and Louis as the artistic director, the company became the pioneer of Austrian and Bohemian crystal production, producing handmade crystal pieces with spectacular design. The company’s growing acclaim led to top tier commissions, including creating chandeliers for Vienna’s lavish Schonbrunn Palace and a collaboration with American inventor Thomas Edison, with whom they created the first electric chandelier in 1883.

During the late 1800s the company also opened a store in Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic, and catered to clients such as Franz Ferdinand, the King of Belgium, the Duke of Brabant, and the Court of Flanders. When Louis died in 1917, his nephew Stefan Roth added clients such as the Vienna State Opera, the Metropolitan Opera, the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, and the Kremlin to the company's long roster of distinguished customers.

Today, the company is still owned and operated by Roth’s descendants. While rooted in history, J. & L. Lobmeyr continues to push the envelope, launching collaborations with contemporary designers such as Ted Muehling, Michael Anastassiades, and Formafantasma. Lobmeyr glassware also appears in some of the world’s finest restaurants and hotels, including Michelin guide three star establishments, such as those of Catalan chef Ferran Adrià and French-born master Alain Ducasse.

The company’s much-coveted pieces are produced by a range of expert artisans, some specializing in mouth-blown crystal, while others produce hand cut pieces. It is Lobmeyr tradition for 26 artisans to take part in the creation and delivery of each piece.

J. & L. Lobmeyr is a rare company in its ability to bridge the worlds of cutting-edge design and old world technique. From exquisite works suitable for a royal palace to modern pieces created in collaboration with some of the design world’s hottest names. The company’s works are available in select showrooms and are available for viewing at the Museum of Modern Art, New York City, and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
