Unrealized Dreams

One year ago, in the early days of the pandemic, we called on a selection of artists from our roster to contribute to a digital body of work addressing a central aspect of this crisis: impossibility. The impossibility of going outside, living life and making work. Under the umbrella of an online exhibition called “Unrealized Dreams”, we wanted to show how this impossibility in turn created the potential for creative catharsis - that is to say, when everything feels impossible and imagination is all we have, that imagined space creates endless possibilities.

Mark Pavlovits

Every object you encounter is the terminus of a long process. Often, the most simple seeming things have the most complicated and arduous origins. A physical entity can contain an invisible story. Years of history, research and labor may be folded into its body. This is especially true of art objects, which are sometimes intentionally vague about the manner in which they came to be. Part of their appeal can be the evocative air of mystery about them - the impression of having just spontaneously appeared, already complete. The maker however, remembers.

The Gentle Immortality of Household Gods

Glass is a highly context-driven material. It’s always a vessel - for water, for light, for its own elaborate history and for its surroundings in any given moment. Both literally and symbolically, we use it to communicate vision. As a stained glass window or as the lens in a camera, it acts as a medium in the communication between light and the eye.

VIDIVIXI

VIDIVIXI’s newest collection is now available at The Future Perfect. The design firm collaborated with Douglas Fenton of Major Visual on a surreal digital rendering to bring each piece into our minds and homes. VIDIVIXI and Major Visual had been looking for a reason to collaborate for over a year and The Future Perfect’s first online exhibition presented the perfect opportunity. Major Visual specializes in visual narratives centered around interiors, design and architecture. For this show they created a simulated exhibition showcasing the work with each piece displayed separately within a glass box. Referencing traditional museum exhibition format, this display method underlines the high level of quality present in Grattan’s work. The presentation plays with scale—the furniture could be lilliputian, at display in the V&A’s archives, or it could be gargantuan.

Matthew Day Jackson

Chaos and beauty are terms that are rarely put together when describing works of intellectual rigor and craftsmanship, yet they’re both apt descriptions when one assesses Matthew Day Jackson’s Wonky furniture collection. Evolving in parallel to the Hauser & Wirth represented artist’s career, the collection now includes dining and coffee tables, stools, chairs and a "Bardenza," a blue credenza/bar hybrid.

Vissio

With breathtakingly beautiful pieces, Vissio traces its origins to Novel Studio, a workshop founded in 1994 as a studio devoted to experimentation and innovation through the medium glass. According to the Mexico-based studio, “the mix [is] in precise proportions of design, craftsmanship, and technique.” Vissio’s projects are all diverse, but the beholder can follow a through line with their ephemeral beauty, creative heft and the maker’s synthesis of tradition and innovation, design and functionality.

Interview with Marcin Rusak

Born in 1987, Polish artist, designer and manufacturer Marcin Rusak is, without question, one of the leading lights in design today. The young designer has always gravitated towards decaying, patinated and aging materials, which gives the artist’s work a beauty cut through with history. According to the artist: Through research, craft, and utilization of new technology, I try to embrace a complex approach to art in order to re-evaluate objects and their significance while celebrating the organic outcome of natural materials and processes.”

Interview with Katherine Gray

For Artist Katherine Gray, glass, her chosen material, offers both the familiar and the otherworldly. With a career that has produced blown glass sculptures to found-art works, Gray continues to create magic within one of the world’s oldest forms of craftsmanship. According to the artist, “my work is about disappearance of some sort and I use glass as an embodiment of that notion. I use a material that we don’t generally ‘see’; [glass] is both known and unknown, quotidian and transcendent at the same time.” Gray, academic and prolific artist as well as the eminent judge on television’s Blown Away, shared her thoughts with us as her ethereal new bowl collection touches down at The Future Perfect.

Design: A Space Odyssey with Matthew Day Jackson

Long before the successful Apollo Missions, many earthlings have engaged in a fascination with outer space. In 1969, with the famous moon landings, an infatuation for some became a mainstream obsession as popular culture followed lunar progress in its taste for all things extraterrestrial. Celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, the watershed moment drove major social change and inspired a generation of aesthetes, academics and entrepreneurs.
