‘Bound Bench’ and ‘Bound Stool’ are a series of experimental seating furniture designed by Maarten Kolk & Guus Kusters. The benches and stools consist of assembled scrap materials held together by ropes. The knots and lines holding the materials in place are inspired by bondage.
‘Bound’ is created from materials that have a function, but failed to fulfil it because of their size or amount. The main material used for the stools and benches is Linoleum, an iconic flooring material by Forbo. Different sheets of the material are layered giving it a certain strength that gives one the ability to use the material in a three-dimensional way. The ‘Bound’ shapes created with the Linoleum sheets may remind one of large pebbles and stones. “We like how Linoleum resembles marble stone in an artificial way. It’s a man-made material, but is created by a natural oxidation process. This process doesn’t stop once the material leaves the factory. This means that the stools and benches are fossilizing as if they are slowly turning into real stones.”
