Inspired by the serendipitous discovery of iridescent surfaces, artist Katherine Gray stumbled upon the captivating bowl design, aiming to recreate an awe-inspiring experience of pure color and light on a smaller scale, reminiscent of James Turrell's "Perceptual Cell." Utilizing a NASA-developed technology used for glass panels on rockets and space shuttles, microscopically thin layers of vaporized metallic oxides, combined with a coating of vaporized quartz, create the mesmerizing iridescence on the glass surface. The sandblasted texture enhances the unique distribution of these deposits, resulting in the glass exhibiting varying colors when viewed from different angles, while the intriguing forms crafted by Gray evoke body parts and skin, intertwining palpability and mystique, allure and enigma.
