Limestone Console

Aaron Silverstein’s Limestone Console Table evokes quixotic Western landscapes. Inspired by a trip the artist and designer made to Devil's Postpone, near Mammoth Lakes, CA, the table is made from Indiana Limestone and blackened steel, a combination of striking modernity.

In California, Silverstein observed the geometric basalt formation that is thought to have formed when lava cooled very rapidly. Curiously, the rocks look man-made and extremely well formed, but they were in fact formed naturally. This paradox informs the table’s design, which was entirely hand cut and carved by Silverstein. The steel parts echo the small inclusions of other minerals in the Postpile, whilst offering support for the weight of the table. The remarkable piece – merging the natural and the man-made - evinces the mixture of art, history, engineering and craft the designer is known for.
