MyungJin Kim in Los Angeles

MyungJin Kim Los Angeles April 24 - June 20, 2025

For her 2025 exhibition in The Future Perfect’s Los Angeles home, MyungJin Kim has delved deeper into her exploration of repeating images as evidentiary—both of the artist’s impulse and of the ubiquity of naturalistic imagery as a commentary on the human need for flora and fauna. She fulfills this need through repetition, finding meaning in iconography and allowing idiograms to build context around themselves, simultaneously weighing universality and specificity against one another. Archetypal without being rigid, Kim’s sculpture is as instantly recognizable as it is fresh upon each viewing.

This exhibition also includes a site-specific mural created in The Future Perfect’s pool house, rendered in Kim’s signature style—a dreamlike layering of repeated botanical and symbolic forms that both anchor and expand her visual language. A new series of side tables and vessels further demonstrates her ability to move fluidly between utility and expression, while two sculptural mirrors and a suite of lighting components continue her inquiry into reflection, light, and the materiality of ornament.

These works show a subtle evolution of her practice, pushing back against the painterly aspects of repetition and instead searching for slight variations in tactile expression. Not to be missed, this collection will be on view as part of The Future Perfect’s Spring 2025 installation, wringing new life from a dripping leaf as the decade turns on its axis.
