By Pettersen & Hein

In their practice Pettersen & Hein explore what happens when art operates out of a function parameter and design is a mere sculptural presence in a room. They continuously ask themselves what happens when design is no longer comprised by function, but longs for the aesthetic and ethical freedom of art? And whether those fields can emerge in a poetic and innovative fashion? Contrast and friction are fundamental elements in our practice, where we combine a shared enthusiasm for industrial materials, with a predilection for concrete, and an intuitive love for imperfections. With our works, we like to change the everyday materials into their contrary. Our practice revolves around a study of the material and the possibilities it offers, but what activates the working process in the first place is the observation of the urban space and the everyday surroundings, from which we draw constant inspiration. Design or art? What happens when design is no longer comprised by function, but longs for the aesthetic and ethical freedom of art? American artist Richard Artschwager once said, “If you sit on it, it’s a chair. If you walk around it and look at it, it’s a sculpture”. Some objects invite for different ways of living and using a space by paying homage to materials, color and form rather than functional use, thereby taking on a clear unique, bold position, the end-result often being intriguing and extraordinary. When boundaries between design and art are effaced potential for magic occurs.
