Diffraction, the first solo exhibition from artist, ceramicist and designer Olivia Cognet, is an investigation of her own practice and the meaning of her work. Delving into a broad spectrum of new materials, movements and rhythmic gestures, Cognet uses her large-scale sculptures to ask herself and her viewer “Is it design? Is it art? Is it craft? Is it a laboratory?”
Using a wide range of materials from lava, wood, mirror, stone, and of course, ceramic, Cognet has chosen to showcase a comprehensive range of her work, offering deeper insight into her creative universe. In preparation for this show, Cognet transformed her studio into a laboratory, pushing the boundaries of ceramic art and challenging herself and her conceptions of what her work could become. Collaborating with renowned craftsmen in specialized workshops to bring her vision to life, Olivia focused her labor with an aperture-like specificity, allowing the titular “diffraction” to occur, in which her work became something simultaneously centered and diffuse.
The resulting works fully embody the artist’s creative vision, technical mastery, and thematic essence. Each piece demonstrates exceptional craftsmanship, with every detail meticulously rendered to achieve a unique representation that is sure to deeply resonate with viewers.
Her work often transcends the limits of the medium, featuring innovative techniques that highlight her skill and originality. Whether it’s a functional design, an abstract form, or an intricate relief, Cognet’s creations are executed with precision and artistry, capturing intended emotions, stories, or concepts with clarity and power.
This quintessential work of Olivia Cognet stands the test of time, blurring the lines between art, design, and craftsmanship, and prompting the question Cognet asks of herself: “Is it art? Is it design? Is it craft? Or is it something entirely new?”
