Piet Hein Eek is a truly singular and visionary artist and designer, whose practice is not only internationally renowned, but also essential to his home in the Netherlands, where his combined studio and experiential complex (including a shop, showroom, gallery, restaurant and event space, all of which live in a constellation around his workshop) employs over 200 people.
To call Eek a force of nature would be not only an accurate description of his practice, but indicative of the ecological focus of his work and his commitment to the use of reclaimed materials and his pioneering of a sustainable design practice.
With Masterworks, The Future Perfect intends to present a cohesive representation of Eek’s work over the years that focuses on an exercise that is central to his practice. Each work started as a relatively simple idea that was in reality, challenging to reproduce – a puzzle that had to be solved. Through this process, Eek not only formally perfects his work, but is motivated to solve problems creatively, thus aligning with his use of reclaimed materials.
One of The Future Perfect’s original roster of artists, Eek has developed his work alongside The Future Perfect’s growth as a gallery and a cultural presence. Masterworks presents a selection of pieces from Eek that showcase his brilliant use of material, his innovative approach to form and object construction, and his commitment to providing the absolute best in designed furniture that is ecologically sustainable.
Many works in this exhibition are one-of-a-kind, which allows Eek’s practice the context it deserves: that of a truly unique and groundbreaking artist, whose work is unparalleled and in a category entirely its own. Masterworks is looking both backwards and forwards: at the work Piet has made, everything he has accomplished, and everything that he has in store.
