Private

Tod Lippy Los Angeles February 27 - April 1, 2024

Experience Private by artist Tod Lippy, on view in the media room of the Goldwyn House. The installation includes two framed editions from the series of Lippy’s photographs of the off-limits areas of commercial art galleries as well as a seven-minute single-channel video incorporating dozens of still and moving images of these spaces. The video features a score composed by Noah and Rosie K comprising electronic instrumentation and elements from field recordings by the duo from many of the galleries Lippy has visited, adding another layer of mystery—and perhaps even menace—to the installation.

The areas depicted in this project are indeed private—most of them clearly demarcated as such—and that word ripples through Lippy’s mesmerizing images to incantatory effect. Without trespassing, he gestures toward the banal, if not insidious, forces behind the artworks on display: commerce and bureaucracy. His cropped images strip the galleries of identifying information, coalescing into an expanse of gatekeeping white space.

On Friday, March 1 at 1 pm, The Future Perfect is pleased to host a talk, book signing, and reception for artist Tod Lippy at The Goldwyn House, in celebration of Private (Mirrorical Books), a book of previously unseen photographs exploring the off-limits spaces in commercial art galleries. Lippy will be joined by Matthew Specktor for a discussion about this body of work and its subject matter. The conversation will be followed by a book signing and reception for the artist. RSVP here.

Private is presented in collaboration with The Meeting, NYC, and will be on view at the Goldwyn House through April 1, 2024.
