With a bachelor’s degree in Design from the Design Academy Eindhoven, Malouin has also studied at the École Nationale Supérieure de Création Industrielle in Paris and the University of Montreal. After graduation, Malouin worked with London designer Tom Dixon before breaking out on his own in 2009 to found his eponymous practice. While maintaining his own collection, Malouin also acts as the director for Post-Office, an architectural and interiors company with a client list that includes companies such as Valextra and Aesop.
With a broad focus that includes tables, rugs, chairs, lights, art objects and installations, Malouin’s use of geometric forms and natural materials result in striking, sometimes radical designs that manage to create a lasting impression. This sense of playful simplicity is enhanced by exceptional craftsmanship and rigorous production resulting in notable cult pieces including his much-coveted Gridlock Chandelier.
His collaboration with 6 other prominent London Designers during the 2012 London Design Festival, called Seven Designers for Seven Dials, marked a project with Dezeen and the Seven Dials shopping district. Malouin’s contribution, a giant installation of bunting made from transparent PVC, both highlighted and celebrated the landmarks and area of Seven Dials.
Malouin’s recent work, an orbiting light installation sited in Miami’s Design District, is a “rollercoaster of light” created by LED. The revolving, raised track is an addition to the Design District’s Christmas decorations and was commissioned by Design Miami co-founder, Craig Robins. Malouin’s design incorporates single bulbs, which jet around the 16 foot light poles, blurring the beams and creating a modern, contemporary vision of traditional holiday decoration. Whimsical and single in execution, the installation encapsulates the designer’s unique vision.
Malouin has won the Wallpaper ‘Best Use of Material’ Award as well as the W Hotels ‘Designer of the Future’ Award. He has worked with clients Hem, Ace hotel, MATTER, Established & Sons, Roll & Hill, 1882 ltd., Kvadrat, Umbra Shift, Caesarstone, IZÉ, Swarovski, Bloomberg, Aesop, and Touch Digital, among others.
