Rogan Gregory grew up in a family of sociologists and anthropologists, a background that continues to inform his practice. As a sculptor, he engages deeply with materials, not only their tactile and aesthetic qualities, but also their role in shaping civilization, technology, and culture. The glasswork created for Use Me, I’m Fragile employs a technique developed in Murano during the 1940s to mimic ancient, unearthed archaeological artifacts. The surface of the glass is textured and faceted with copious amounts of silica powder, ash, and detritus. These shapes and surfaces are reminiscent of the many undersea bodies and forms Gregory has encountered while skin diving in oceans and waterways around the world.
