For the Open and Closed exhibition Raben Davidsen has made a series of salt fired stoneware lidded jars and vessels inspired by hut shaped urns from the ninth to eighth centuries BC. The urns ritually and symbolically deposited in a “house” to recall the essence of a person. Also included are three breast shaped lidded stoneware jars titled “Mammal” and some large vessels, shaped as alchemical devises, which were originally used to heat substances into their purest forms. In these works, Raben Davidsen creates a direct link with the magical ‘world’ inside the jars and pays homage to the ghostly, esoteric and mystical qualities embedded in the historic ceramic tradition and its cultural use.
