IRON VENUS transforms the humblest domestic fixture into a design femme fatale; something brutal, gnostic, and a bit kitsch, born of a collision between two iconic Italianate divas—the love goddess Venus and the Brooklyn brownstone. Part palazzo, part profane, the IRON VENUS night light exists in the register where menace meets seduction, and danger becomes opulent: the object equivalent of a 90s erotic thriller.
A handmade porcelain clamshell light bulb perches atop a vertical spine of repurposed scrap iron —the same residential ironwork making up the railings, fences, and window guards that adorn brownstones, casting their graceful shadow music across our city sidewalks. Tracing origins to a breakthrough in the 1850s in cast iron techniques, when decorative metalwork became more accessible, IRON VENUS honors the mainstreaming of ornament by giving new life to these offcuts. The porcelain bivalve form hovers between seashell and flesh-eating flytrap, cutting a figure that could just as easily have been fished out of Dead Horse Bay as it could be strewn like razored tinsel atop a barbed security fence. As a light source, it is both invitation and warning: an urban torch for a coastal island city that, like New York itself, is simultaneously elegant and hostile. Like moths to a flame, our groggy nocturnal souls can’t resist the siren’s call.
