John Hogan
Hogan grew up in Toledo, Ohio, one of the world's leading centers for glass. He studied traditional glassblowing methods at the city’s acclaimed Toledo Art Museum, then relocated to Seattle, where a glass community has coalesced around the Pilchuck Glass School in Stanwood, WA. He has studied traditional kiln casting and cold working techniques in the Czech Republic and modern sculpting approaches in Japan. Hogan has had residencies at the Tacoma Museum of Glass, The Toledo Museum of Art, and the Pilchuck Glass School. His work has been widely exhibited and celebrated internationally, with work shown in Basel, Milan, Paris, Shanghai, New York, and elsewhere.
His work marries tradition with modern influences: casting and cold working techniques are steeped in old Eastern European practices, which emphasize simplicity and the pure, optical quality of glass, while his rich, inventive use of color and formal references is more contemporary and unexpected.
