Los Angeles-based artist Leena Similu’s ceramic-based sculptural work was born out of her own experience of becoming a mother. In making her ceramic works during pregnancy, Similu was compelled to think of her West African origins and the ancestors and culture that her child would inherit. Along with the artist’s facial pareidolia, the ceramic works are a composite of her matriarchal lineage and its power, exploring her specific place in a long line of mothers before her.
