Chen Chen & Kai Williams’ 55 Cubic Inches takes inspiration from 1960s race car chassis such as the Porsche 917 and the 1961 Lotus Formula 1. These vehicles used tubular aluminum space frames to circulate oil from engine to radiator, an experiment later abandoned when the heat radiating through the frame proved dangerous to the driver. Constructed from 1.5-inch 6061 aluminum tubing and fitted with a 1-inch weld-on gas cap, the jug channels both containment and circulation. Its name refers to the 55 cubic inches of liquid it holds. Known for their experimental, materially driven practice, the Brooklyn-based designers often manipulate stone, wood, and ceramics through both industrial and haptic processes, transforming familiar materials into unexpected forms.
