Openwork Chair
By Alex Reed
The Openwork Chair represents the latest in ceramicist Alex Reed's efforts to push ceramics beyond conventional applications in object and spatial design. The chair is constructed of an oak core, clad in ceramic and grout. The chair utilizes a system of hyper-specific tile units, realized through the expert deployment of craft skills. Throughout history, ceramics interaction with architecture is often marked by the repetition of discreet units (tiles) that make up a unified whole. The Openwork Chair utilizes the inherent power of small things coming together to form a larger structure.
