Anina Major’s Mercury Rising transforms the familiar structure of a woven basket into a sculpture of glazed stoneware and sand. Dense, dark plaits form its rectilinear body, while elongated strands curve over the opening in a rhythmic crown of deep red and metallic tones. Appearing both ancient and newly unearthed, the work preserves the labor of its making while allowing clay to assume the flexibility and movement of fiber.
