Eric Roinestad

Eric Roinestad is an American ceramicist, known for his ability to synthesize seemingly opposing aesthetics into wholly original works. His pieces - from sculptures to lighting - suggest a dialogue between the organic and the fabricated; the contemporary and the traditional.

Integrating the spirit of California folk modernism with the designer’s own Scandinavian heritage, Roinestad combines conventional wheel-thrown processes with hand-built methods, giving his work a visceral, human feel. The result is an idiosyncratic body of work that is continuously evolving and released in a strictly limited edition series once every six months (and never replicated).

Roinestad was born into a family of artisans, and raised in California's Central Coast. He pursued a degree in applied art and design from California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo, before moving to Los Angeles, where he opened a boutique graphic design studio. In the late 90s, he helped design and launch Flaunt Magazine, the beloved avant-garde monthly, prized for its deft blend of art, music, design and fashion. As Flaunt’s art director from 1998 to 2002, Roinestad was the force behind its loud graphics and highly tactile reading experience. In 2002, he became the senior art director for Capitol Records, where he oversaw album design and packaging.

Ceramics began as a passion project, but soon evolved into a career. With natural instincts for proportion and form, his work – which drew from the natural beauty of California, as well as modern design and historical architecture – quickly caught the attention of collectors.

Roinestad made his Design Miami debut in 2016 with his first lighting pieces, then showed again in 2017 with an expansion of the same collection. His work now includes a range of sculptural and decorative pieces, most at larger scale. Eric Roinestad ceramics have been featured in a variety of international publications, including The New York Times T Magazine, Architectural Digest, Elle Decor, AD France and Wallpaper.
