Drawing inspiration from the blossoming tropical flora found in the mountains and forests of his adopted home of Medellin, Colombia, Flower Power, the newest exhibition of works by Chris Wolston represents the artist’s ongoing exploration of material, tactile communication. Combining historically developed craft methods with Wolson’s energized designs, sculpted and created with his own hands, Flower Power signals the artist’s return to a direct relationship with the medium of clay. Stemming from his Fulbright study of pre-Columbian ceramics, this exchange with terracotta, specifically, is visceral and direct. Sourced from a mine outside of Bogotá, this media is common to the region, allowing a material language that is present in everyday life to continue to come alive in Wolston’s expanding oeuvre. Flower Power signals the diverse range of Wolston’s output, and provides the opportunity to return to the haptic and immediate gestural work of a sculptor.
